If youโ€™re planning on spending some time in the Kingdom of Tonga, Iโ€™ve got you covered with the ultimate, flexible, 2 week Tonga travel itinerary!

I recently spent a little over 2 weeks in Tonga and had a wild adventure! For me the beauty of the Kingdom was in the calm moments. Moments spent chatting with locals, swimming at the beach (and with whales!) and sipping from coconuts.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™ve created a slower itinerary. One that doesnโ€™t have you on a plane or ferry every 3 days. Iโ€™ve created this itinerary with maximum island vibes built in!

Letโ€™s get into it and create your perfect 2 weeks in the South Pacifics last true Kingdom!

About Tonga

Best resort in Haโ€™apai: Matafonua

Best resort in Vaโ€™vau: Mystic Sands

Tonga is one of the southernmost countries in the South Pacific and the last true isle Kingdom.

It is comprised of 176 islands, which are divided into 3 main โ€œchainsโ€ known as Tongatapu, Haโ€™apai and Vaโ€™vau.

Tongatapu is where the island’s capitol, Nukuโ€™alofa, is located. You will have to fly in and out of Fuaโ€™amotu airport on Tongatapu, as itโ€™s the only international airport in the Kingdom.

How to Get to Tonga

How to travel to tonga, tonga on a map circled in red... it's a tiny spec!

When you look at Tonga on the map, itโ€™s a tinnyyyy spec! So how the heck do you get there?

Thankfully there are several international flights in and out of the country every day. While there are occasionally direct flights from LAX, if youโ€™re flying from the U.S. the most common way to get to Tonga is by flying through New Zealand,Fiji, or Tahiti.

Once youโ€™re in the country the real fun with transportation begins

The local airline is Lulutai airlines, a sub par airline that totally has a monopoly on air transportation in the country. As of 2025 they are the only domestic airline and flying with them is the fastest way to get between island chains. Keep that in mind when planning your trip

If you are up for more of an adventure or on a tighter budget, you may consider taking the 12+ hour ferry to the outer island chains. The 3 ferry companies are Tofa Ramsey Shipping, Malau Shipping and Friendly Island Shipping Company.

You canโ€™t buy ferry tickets in advance and thereโ€™s little info about them online. The best way to see their schedule is through their facebook page.

The โ€œisland timeโ€ transportation in Tonga is one of the reasons Iโ€™ve designed a schedule with lots of buffer days!

How to Spend 2 Weeks in Tonga

Iโ€™ve designed this route to be flexible and customizable to tailor to your adventure needs!

Everything starts and ends on the main island of Tongatapu. From there you’ll take trips to the outer island chains of Haโ€™apai and Vaโ€™vau (or to the nearby island of ‘Eua which is part of the Tongatapu island chain).

If you donโ€™t have two weeks, you can choose to explore either Haโ€™apai or Vaโ€™vau or spend a shorter amount of time in each.

Day 1

Arrive on Tongatapu… YAY! You’re in Tonga!

There are no buses from the airport terminal and the main town is on the other side of the island. Youโ€™ll need to catch a taxi which will cost around $30 USD to the town of Nukuโ€™alofa

Where to stay in Nuku’alofa

$$$ Little Italy

$$ Villa Isadora

$ NOA guesthouse

I recommend just hanging around town on your first day. Once youโ€™re in Nukuโ€™alofa everything in town is within walking distance.

Days 2 – 6

Back to the airport! This time you’ll go to the domestic airport and fly to Haโ€™apai!

The view from an airplane window looking down onto a turquoise blue reef and island in the ocean. Where we would whale swim in Tonga. The propellor of the small plane is visible
View on the flight to Ha’apai

Haโ€™apai is hailed as the way the South Pacific used to be and it truly is a remote island paradise! The week we spent on Haโ€™apai was probably the highlight of our trip!

We swam with whales, snorkeled, biked to town and read our books by the sea. It was an ideal beach getaway

Where to stay on Ha’apai

$$$ Sandy Beaches Resort

$$$ Sea Change Eco Retreat

$$ Matafonua

$$$ Serenity Beaches Resort

$ Dianas Resort (Tongan Owned!)

$ Evalonis Guesthouse (backpackers option)

Days 7 – 11

Next up youโ€™ll fly to Vaโ€™vau, the 3rd and final island chain!

Vaโ€™vau has become the most popular island in recent years, there is even the occasional cruise ship in town! We didnโ€™t make it up to Vaโ€™vau but we heard itโ€™s got some of the best water visibility for snorkeling! It also boasts the most modern facilities for tourists.

Where to Stay on Va’vau

$$$ Mystic Sands Resort

$$$ Mounu Island Resort (a beautiful resort island)

$$ Puataukanave Hotel

$ Port Wine Guesthouse (backpackers option)

Days 12 & 13

Fly back to Tongatapu a few days before your international flight! You’ll want to have 2 “layover” or “buffer” days on Tongatapu before your flight.

This is your chance to explore a bit more of the main island! If you want to take a tour, grab your taxiโ€™s business card… every taxi driver on the island seems to do tours! You can usually get a half or even full day tour for a good price.

If you want the security of booking a Tongatapu tour ahead of time, check out this family operated 6 hr tour.

Day 14

Time to head out on your international flightโ€ฆ make sure youโ€™ve booked a flexible fare just in case youโ€™ve been delayed on an outer island!

Adventure Option…

If youโ€™ve got more time or want to swap out either Haโ€™apai or Vaโ€™vau, check out the rarely visited โ€˜Eua!

โ€˜Eua is unlike any of the other islands in the Kingdom, I was told itโ€™s geologically 30 million years older than the rest of the country! We spent 8 days on โ€˜Eua with the kind and generous Kiko at Kikos Guesthouse.

‘Eua is just a 7 minute flight or 3 hr (and $12) ferry away from Nukuโ€™alofa.

Cost of Traveling in Tonga

How much will 2 weeks of island travel in Tonga cost you?

Iโ€™ve done a full Tonga budget breakdown where I go over all the numbers and cost of different accommodations.

If you do a blend of guesthouses/resorts and ferries/flights you can expect to spend around $2000 USD (excluding international flights) for 2 weeks in Tonga if you do a whale swim.

I was able to travel for $136 a day which included whale swimming twice

If you donโ€™t swim with whales your trip will be closer to $1400 USD.

Top Things to Do in Tonga

Things to know before swimming with whales in Tonga. The water is a bit murky here but you can clearly see the back and tail of a humpback whale underwater

So what are the top things to do in Tonga?

If you’re there from late June – early October odds are you’ve planned to swim with whales! This is an incredible experience and Tonga is one of the few places where you can snorkel alongside a majestic humpback.

Besides whale swimming there’s snorkeling in general – I loved seeing the healthy coral and amazing tropical fish!

There are also land tours, opportunities to kite surf, scuba dive, horseback ride, bike, sail and just relax on the beach. My honest piece of advice is not to worry to much about planning out all your activities.

You’ll want to book whale swimming in advance, but almost everything else will happen on island time! We just showed up and learned about all the things our accommodation offered upon arrival.

So there you have it! A flexible 2 week Tonga travel itinerary that wonโ€™t break the bank! I had such an incredible adventure during my 2 weeks in Tonga, I love writing about the country because it makes me feel like Iโ€™m there all over again!

I experienced amazing snorkeling, kind locals, a life changing swim with whales and a taste of the South Pacific. I hope you too get to experience the magic of Tonga!

Make sure you book any resorts far in advance as some of them fill up years before! If youโ€™re planning on staying at a guesthouse you will be able to book that closer to your arrival date. If youโ€™re there between July-October donโ€™t miss out on the whale swim!

Happy travels!
