I have been utterly charmed by Picton!

I first traveled through Picton back in 2022 on my way to catch the ferry to the north island. The cozy little town with it’s quirky hostel, delicious bakery and surrounding scenery immediately made an impression.

Now in 2025 I’m living in Nelson, just 2 hours from Picton and I’ve made sure to return a few times! I have devised how to spend 1 perfect day in Picton!

Many people end up going through Picton either on purpose or on accident due the fact that it is the gateway to between the islands via the ferry. You may be coming up from Kaikoura for the day, planning on hiking the Queen Charlotte Track or on your way to catch the ferry – if you only a few hours in Picton you’ll want to make the most of it!

Quick Tips

๐Ÿ“ Where is Picton: The top of the South Island, 4.5 hrs north of Christchurch

Best Hotel: Bay Vista Waterfront Motel

My Favorite Eatery: Picton Village Bakery

Where to Stay in Picton

Picton is a pretty small town, so most everything is centrally located! My top pick is The Villa Hostel, I had such a good time staying here with my friends! We could walk to the bakery, downtown, the hiking trail and the ferry. Not to mention I loved the outdoor courtyard area and hot tub!

I’ll of course highlight a few other options I’ve heard great things about…

Hostels

There are only a few hostels in Picton and I’m recommending 2, the one I stayed at and one my friend had a good experience at!

My top pick is The Villa. This is where my friends and I stayed and we really loved it. The kitchen was nice and big (not the cleanest but not horrible!), we met other really lovely travelers, the rooms were clean and it was centrally located.

Alternately, I had a friend stay in The Atlantis recently and he had a good experience there! It’s even closer to the waterfront and is slightly cheaper than The Villa.

Hotels

Again I work hard to only recommend places I’ve personally stayed or have had a trustworthy recommendation for. My partner stayed at The Bay Vista Waterfront Motel with his family (I was sadly working) and they loved their stay there!

The Bay Vista Waterfront Motel boasts a beautiful ocean view and is great for families due to their apartment style accommodation.

Camping

I simply must give a little shoutout to camping in Picton! We camped out of our car in the summer of 2025 in Picton and had the best week!

We camped at the Department of Conservation Whatamango Campsite. It was perfect for car campers, vans and tent camping! We even snorkeled in the bay there and while we didn’t see many fish we did see a ton of cool little sea stars. The water was perfect for swimming!

Where to Eat in Picton

Here’s my top 3 eateries in Picton!

  1. Village Bakery

No trip to Picton is complete without a stop at the Village Bakery! This award winning bakery never disappoints with their array of delicious pies, pastries, breads and sandwiches! Just be sure to get there before 3:30 pm when they close.

2. Gusto

Gusto is a great relaxed place to stop for lunch or a coffee! They are also very accommodating for any dietary restriction!

3. Oxley’s Bar and Kitchen

My friends and I went here on a “treat yourself” dinner and it was so lovely! Oxley’s is right across the street from the water and they have amazing food and cocktails inside their beautiful restaurant!

What to Do in Picton

Besides just walking around the little town, there are many great things to do and see in Picton, but not so many that you feel like you’re missing out by only being there a day. Lets get into it shall we!

Free Things to do in Picton

I’ll be honest there’s not many mind blowing free things to do in Picton. Pretty much all the free stuff revolves around hiking, which I am 100% okay with!

  1. ๐Ÿ“ Snouts Track
how to spend 1 day in picton, walk over the foot bridge and you'll find the snout hiking trail
“The Snout” hiking trail starts just after the foot bridge downtown!

You may see Snouts Track advertised as like, 3 different hikes, but it’s essentially all the same. From the downtown cross over the little bridge and you’ll find yourself at the harbor near the yacht club. From there you’ll find the trail head in the parking lot leading down the little peninsula. There are multiple view points along the way. If you do the whole thing expect it to take about 3.5 hours.

2. ๐Ÿ“ Bobs Bay

Bobs bay is a secluded little swimming bay with gravely sand and temperate waters. Don’t expect a perfect white sand beach, but it is a nice spot for a picnic or quiet moment near the water. It’s only about a 20 minute walk down the trail on the Snout and is moderate terrain (i.e. not flat).

3. Learn a bit about the history

Okay this is a bit cheeky, but my partner and I were walking around Picton in the evening and wandered over to the Edwin Fox maritime museum. Now it was long closed at this hour but we got to see a bit of the historical boat from the outside and we could read all the infographic signs on the outside of the building! We actually learned a lot about Picton’s history as a Maori trading center.

Activities in Picton

Stunning views on the Queen Charlotte Track!

There are a handful of cool paid experiences in Picton as well! These are totally worth checking out if you have more than just a few hours in the town.

1. Queen Charlotte Track Day Hike

The Queen Charlotte Track is a multi-day hike that takes you through the Marlborough Sound. BUT if you only have a day in Picton, you can hike part of the remote track as a day hike!

This will be a full day experience, but one you’re never going to forget! We hiked the multi-day Queen Charlotte track and absolutely loved it.

If you’re just in Picton for a day, it’s a treat to get out on this track for a few hours. The tour includes a 1 hr boat ride to Ship Cove in the heart of the Marlborough Sound. From there you can expect about a 4-5 hour walk to your pick up location, and then a 1 hr boat ride back.

2. Wine Tour of the Region

This recommendation is coming from my partner Nate. He did the full day wine tour with his family while I was stuck at work! If you’ve only got 1 day in Picton I would recommend doing the half day wine tour so you have time for a hike or to hang out in the town center.

You can expect this tour to take about 4 hours starting at 1pm. You’ll be driven to 4 different wineries in the area and will experience the tastings in small groups. Nate had an absolute blast and his family loved they didn’t have to worry about driving logistics!

3. Mail Boat Cruise

Since we effectively did a little mini boat cruise during our transit to the Queen Charlotte track, I wanted to recommend getting out on the water if you can in Picton. Seeing the area by water is absolutely amazing. I am such a sucker for anything ocean related!!

Then I learned your boat cruise can get even better… you can ride along the boat that delivers mail to the more remote areas of Marlborough Sound! Ummmm… OKAY COOL!! You may even get to see dolphins!

Sting Rays in Picton

I had to include a little section about the sting rays you can see in Picton! If you’re on the harbor bridge and look down into the water, you may just see the short-tail sting rays cruising around! This is a type of pelagic or ocean going sting ray that comes into the Picton Harbor! We saw them there in summer and there was no information about them anywhere!

I have a degree in marine science and have seen pelagic rays before, so my friends and I were able to identify these rays as short-tail rays (we believe!). They are so beautiful and graceful to watch cruise by!

Downtown picton!

If you’re looking for a full day itinerary I’ve got you covered! If I had just 1 day to spend in Picton, this is how I’d spend it!

8am: Breakfast at the Village Bakery

9am: Walk to the Snout Track and hike along the ridge or down to Bobs Bay

12pm: Lunch at Gusto

12:30pm: Walk around downtown Picton (find the sting rays!)

1:15pm: Meet for the Mail Boat Cruise

5:30pm: Return from the boat cruise

6pm: Dinner at Oxley’s

And that is how to spend 1 perfect day in Picton!

You get to see a little bit of everything, take in beautiful scenery, do a bit of hiking and get off the beaten path with the boat cruise. Picton is a pretty sleepy town but if you’re planning on being there in January or February make sure to book your accommodation and tour in advance!

I hope you can make it to Picton even if it’s just for a day!
