My simple itinerary is the perfect place to start planning your first trip to Greymouth! I’ve visited this sleepy little town a number of times while living in New Zealand and this ultimate 1-day Greymouth itinerary holds up every time!
I’ll show you where to stop, what to book (Greymouth is home to my favorite hostel in New Zealand!) and the best eats in town so you can cruise into Greymouth with confidence.

Why I Like Greymouth
Greymouth is the perfect little stop-over town and it packs a ton of character. At a first glance just driving through, the town does have a sort of “industrial” feel. But when you actually stop to spend the night, you’ll discover a wild and rugged beach, fearless surfers, bike paths and dolphins.
The BEST Place to Stay in Greymouth
For me, it’s no contest, the BEST place to stay in Greymouth is the Global Village Travellers Lodge!
Seriously I can’t rave about this hostel enough. I’ve stayed there 3 times this year (soon to be a 4th)!
This hostel is close to the main town center, grocery store and beach, all while being tucked away from the road by the river. The atmosphere is immediately warm and welcoming (thanks to the super kind owners) and has eclectic decor.
You can enjoy a private room (with a shared bathroom) or crash in a dorm room. The kitchen is large and very clean and there’s a plethora of dining space. Not only do they have a ton of games and instruments, you can also utilize the free bikes and there’s even a sauna for a small fee.
They always have special promotions with businesses in town (like 10% off at Monteiths Brewery) and they give great recommendations.
This is the only place I stay in Greymouth and I’m looking forward to my next stay there in a few weeks.

Where to Eat in Greymouth
My favorite restaurant – Monteiths Brewery. With a large open dining area, great beer and a top notch menu, it’s absolutely worth a visit! Plus the portions are pretty big which filled me up after the Paparoa Great Walk.
For lunch – Sevenpenny Cafe

Best Things to do Around Greymouth
These are my top things to do in and around Greymouth so that you can plan your perfect day in town!
Visit the Punakaiki “Pancake Rocks”
Located a beautiful 45 minute drive up the coast, Punakaiki is a must visit spot along the west coast. But I’ll be honest, the first time I visited here, I was a little underwhelmed. Since that 2022 trip, they have added a huge new visitors center so you can learn more about the history of the area.
I would recommend visiting the visitors center and reading a bit about the geography of the area so that you can be extra impressed when you see the pancake rocks and the blowholes.
And while I wasn’t totally blown away by this “attraction” I do still think it would be a shame to miss it! The drive from Greymouth to Punakaiki alone is stunning, and the scenic reserve has great walking paths. Punakaiki also buds up against Paparoa National Park, so you can tack on some hiking if it suits you!
I personally don’t think a guided tour is needed for this area.
Look for the Worlds Smallest Dolphin
Hectors dolphins are the smallest dolphins in the world and are found primarily on the west coast of New Zealand. Greymouth is one of the best places to spot them!
Head down to the breakwater to try to catch a glimpse of them. I’ve tried 2 times now with now luck, but I’m told they are often there playing in the surf!
Take a Surf Lesson in Greymouth
Anywhere I go with a surf break I always find myself trying to watch people catch waves! It’s just so mesmerizing! The best spot to watch surfers is Shipwreck Point.
You can even do one better than just watching surfers by surfing yourself! This is an experience I’ve missed out on in Greymouth – if surfing is a dream of yours book a lesson today!
This 2 hr beginner surf lesson is a safe way to experience some of that Greymouth ocean magic. If you want a unique experience you’ll be talking about. for years, book this class!
Bike Along the Bike Path
There’s a really lovely oceanside bike path that follows the beach. My partner and I used the bikes from Global Village to do a sunset ride down to the breakwater (where we looked for dolphins in vain) before biking to Monteiths for a beer.
Truly a perfect evening! Take advantage of the bikes and this beautiful bike path!
Enjoy the Beach + Visit the Driftwood House
Walking along the beach is probably the ultimate free activity. And then I stumbled upon the driftwood house! This super cool giant driftwood structure is listed as a “tourist attraction” on google maps, but I think it’s a hidden gem! I had never heard anyone mention it and when I was the only person there when I was checking it out.
There’s also a lot of history in Greymouth, and while other guides may recommend attractions like “Shantytown Heritage Park” I’ve chosen to skip out on that for this 1-day guide. If you’re a first time visitor to Greymouth, I would focus on the rugged coastline and outdoorsy activities!
Sample 1-Day Greymouth Itinerary
If I was a first time visitor to Greymouth, this is how I would spend my day!
9am – Hit the road and drive north to Punakaiki
12 pm – Lunch at Punakaiki Rocks Garden Bar . We hung out here after the Paparoa Great Walk, it’s got a cool feel and ample outdoor seating. It’s worth the 2 minute drive down the road and doesn’t feel overly touristy
1 pm – Back in Greymouth
Afternoon – Consider: taking a surf lesson (tide dependent) , hanging on the beach, looking for dolphins or checking out the driftwood house
Dinner – Monteiths Brewery
Sunset – Take a sunset bike ride down the seaside bike path
Last Tips for Visiting Greymouth
That is the ultimate 1-day Greymouth itinerary for first time visitors! I think you’ll find Greymouth to perfectly located for many of your west coast adventures, and you may even want to extend your stay to multiple nights.
If you’re planning on staying in the area longer, consider checking out the Paparoa Hiking Trail , the Hokitika Gorge and Franz-Josef. Greymouth is the perfect stop on a longer west coast road trip. oran off-the beaten path south island trip.
The only thing you need to book in advance is the Global Village Lodge, as they are quiet popular and rooms book out in the summer.
