If youโ€™re looking for an authentic Tongan travel experience, youโ€™ll want to add โ€˜Eua to your list!

โ€˜Eua Tonga is geologically 30 million years older than the rest of the islands in the Kingdom. Featuring a hilly topography, it rises over 1,000 ft up from sea level. The beaches are more rugged and volcanic as well, with dramatic ancient lava flows meeting the surf.ย

I spent over 2 weeks in Tonga, 9 days of that on โ€˜Eua.

During our time there I think we saw about 12 other tourists in total – and this was during the high season! โ€˜Eua really is the โ€œforgotten islandโ€ of the Kingdom!

Due to the dynamic weather and life on a small remote island, tourism infrastructure changes all the time on Tonga. And unfortunately itโ€™s hard to find much information online! Even reviews from just a few years ago can be outdated.

This is my complete guide for traveling to โ€˜Eua, Tonga (as of the 2025 travel season) including where to stay, what to do and how to get there!

‘Eua at a Glance

Location: 12 Miles from Tongas main island (Tongatapu), South Pacific

How to get there: Flight or ferry from Tongatapu

Best Resort: Blue Water Retreat

Best Guesthouse: Kikos Guesthouse

Best Activity: Swim with Humpback Whales!

How to get to ‘Eua, Tonga

‘Eua is just 12 miles S.E. of the main island Tongatapu

Tonga is a tinnnny spec in the ocean, and โ€˜Eua is an even tinier spec off to the side! The only international airport is on the main island of Tongatapu.

There are several international flights in and out of the country every day. While there are occasionally direct flights from LAX, if youโ€™re flying from the U.S. the most common way to get to Tonga is by flying through New Zealand or Fiji. Make sure to plan a few buffer days before your international flight home!

Once youโ€™re in the country itโ€™s relatively โ€œeasyโ€ to get to โ€˜Eua.

I say โ€œeasyโ€ because the transportation is totally Tongan style and operates on island time, so if you like reliably departing airplanes or ferries youโ€™re out of luck.

โ€˜Eua is just a 7 minute flight ($65) or 3 hr ($12) ferry from Nukuโ€™alofa.

The local airline is Lulutai airlines, a sub par airline that totally has a monopoly on air transportation in the country. As of 2025 they are the only domestic airline and flying with them is the fastest way to get anywhere in the Kingdom. The flight to โ€˜Eua is one of the shortest commercial flights in the world!

The 3 ferry companies are Tofa Ramsey Shipping, Malau Shipping and Friendly Island Shipping Company. You canโ€™t buy tickets in advance and thereโ€™s little info about them online. The best way to see their schedule is through their facebook page. You cannot buy tickets in advance because the schedules are always changing!

Heads up, in 2025, Wednesday was the designated โ€œcargo onlyโ€ day. There are no flights or ferries on Sundays in Tonga.

I personally took the ferry and it was quiet the cultural experience! I would 100% recommend it if youโ€™re up for the adventure! It was us, 4 other tourists and about 40 Tongans all on a cargo ship.

Accomodation on ‘Eua

As I mentioned โ€˜Eua is a small island with limited resources, tsunami and cyclone damage can take years to fix and lots of accommodations have closed on the island.

While I was there in July 2025 there were just a handful of options!

Our favorite beach on ‘Eua: Tufuvai (right in front of Blue Water Retreat)

Kikos Guesthouse: Iโ€™m putting Kiko at the top of the list because thatโ€™s where I stayed during my time on โ€˜Eua!

If you want an affordable, local family owned spot oozing with Tongan hospitality Kikos is a must! Kiko and his family were so kind. They showed us around, gave us an amazing whale swim and even cooked lunch for us on the days we were stuck on โ€˜Eua

Kikos is a 10 minute walk from the beach and right down the street from a bank, grocery store and the main village. They operate a restaurant but you can also cook for yourself.

Blue Water Retreat:  The only resort on the island, Blue Water Retreat is a modern stay with the best facilities for tourists. Located right on the water they offer a great location to watch the whales swim by! We snorkeled in front of their facilities a couple of times and the staff was super friendly! They also offer a range of booking packages and tours!

Setaโ€™s Guesthouse: I didnโ€™t personally meet anyone staying here but I walked by Setaโ€™s many times on my way to Tufuvai beach. Itโ€™s a more private accommodation option near the beach and sleeps up to 5 people. They also offer shuttle services.

Again itโ€™s hard to tell online what is still operating and what has since shut down. Those are 3 accommodations I saw with my own eyes just a few months ago, so they should be a safe bet!

Food in Tonga

Throughout your travels in Tonga it is important to remember that you are way far out in the Pacific and resources are limited. Itโ€™s not easy to get international foods here, indeed there are no โ€œwholefoodsโ€ or chain restaurants.

Most of the guesthouses also have a restaurant, so you can opt to buy a meal which will cost around $12 usd. There are also a few restaurants scattered across the villages. The signature dish in Tonga is Ota โ€˜Ika, which is a South Pacific ceviche and quite good! Iโ€™ve never had such tender raw fish before.

The grocery stores are going to vary depending on which island youโ€™re on, but the bulk of them remains the same. Just 2 -3 isles of processed and pre-packaged food.

Most stores had one whole aisle for chips/cookies/candy and then another aisle where pasta, canned meat, coconut milk, baby food, spices, noodles and canned veggies shared the shelves. There were also fresh rolls and local eggs in just about every store.

There are no โ€œquick and healthyโ€ convenience foods like granola bars available, so if you like those bring your own from home. if you have any sort of dietary restriction you may want to bring your own snacks as well!

Things to Do on ‘Eua

For an island thatโ€™s just 20 miles long there is a surprising amount to do on โ€˜Eua!

‘Eua Tonga Whales!

This is footage from my whale swim on ‘Eua! 4 adult humpbacks cruising below us

The #1 activity in Tonga is of course swimming with whales. โ€˜Eua may even have the best whale swimming season as itโ€™s not crowded (there are just 2 tour operators), the water visibility is amazing and the whales hang out there for the longest.

Aim to plan your trip from late July – Early Oct for the best chances of getting in the water with a whale!

Whale swimming is magical but it is WORK. I recommend reading โ€œ10 things to know before swimming with whalesโ€ to decide if itโ€™s the right activity for you. Even if you don’t get in the water, whale watching is an amazing activity available on ‘Eua!

I had an absolutely amazing and dare I say life changing whale swim on โ€˜Eua with Kikos Whale Swim.

‘Eua was the first place I got in the water with whales and I will never forget my first look at a humpback gracefully coming up to take a breath. We spent nearly 6 hours on the boat but we got to get in the water 4 different times with whales!ย

I was especially impressed with Kiko’s safety guidelines for the tour. There are never more than 8 guests on the boat and only 4 people (plus 1 guide) in the water at a time. With a major emphasis on respect for the whales.

Land Tours

Kikos and some other accommodation on โ€˜Eua also offer land tours! They offer full or half day tours that take you to the interior of the island, which is nearly impossible to see without a 4×4. Youโ€™ll go into the heart of the โ€˜Eua National Park, see dramatic cliffs and the famous โ€˜Big Ovava Tree.โ€™

Renting Bikes

You can also rent bikes during your time on โ€˜Eua to get a bit further out from your walking radius. We spent a full day on the bikes hoping to bike out to the Laku Faโ€™anga Cliffs. Unfortunately we met a very territorial dog and decided to turn around before we made it. But the views and experience along the way were unforgettable!

Our bike rentals were $20 usd for the day, but our friends got theirs for $12โ€ฆ. They just didnโ€™t have breaks!

Church in Tonga

If youโ€™re on โ€˜Eua on a Sunday I highly recommend getting yourself out to a church service! Even if youโ€™re not religious this is an incredible service you wonโ€™t forget. The sermon will be in Tongan so you donโ€™t need to worry about taking notes.

The real joy of being there is hearing the amazing singing from the congregation! As one guy put it – โ€œitโ€™ll curl your toes!โ€

How to Get Around ‘Eua, Tonga

I was super concerned with getting around before I got to โ€˜Eua. Once I got there I learned to chill out! Everything is on island time and island hospitality.

The best way to get from the’Eua ferry wharf or airport to your accommodation is by an arranged pickup, which your accommodation will likely include in your stay. Once youโ€™re at your guesthouse most things like the beach, whale swim or grocery store will all be within walking distance. If you want to walk to a neighboring village it likely wonโ€™t be more than 20 minutes or so.

Planning a trip to Tonga and Stuck on 'Eua. 4 people go for a walk on a dirt road

We even walked an hour to the Hafu Pools (natural fresh water pools) from Kikos one day just to stretch our legs.

Being offered a ride by a local is also pretty common, of course use your discretion when accepting rides!

However if you do want to get all the way across the island or to the interior, you will need to arrange a 4WD tour.

Money in Tonga

Tongan money

Cash is king in Tonga!

If you stay at Kikos you will need to pay in cash (they accept TOP, USD and NZD). Thankfully there are many โ€˜Bank of South Pacificโ€™ or BSP offices scattered around the villages. I would recommend asking your accommodation where they recommend getting cash from. We were able to walk 5 minutes to a Western Union BSP to do our cash withdrawal.

Travel Insurance

As always, make sure you have travel insurance! I use SafetyWing and itโ€™s less than $2 a day! As my favorite travel blogger says, if you canโ€™t afford travel insurance you can’t afford to travel!

Also ensure to plan yourself travel buffer days as well as flexible international tickets for your departure in case you get hung up on an outer island (like we did).

Stray Dogs

Lastly, there were a ton of stray dogs throughout Tonga, which is something to be aware of when planning your trip.

We walked a lot on โ€˜Eua – to the beach, grocery store and just to see the sights. There were dogs everywhere we went. If you are in a village the dogs are likely habituated to people and you can just walk right past them.

The only time we encountered a truly aggressive dog was about 5k outside a village on a bike ride. The dog started barking at us and running towards us from a couple hundred yards down the road. We got off our bikes and slowly backed up and eventually it stopped following us, held its line but kept barking.

The dogs donโ€™t have rabies (from what we were told) and bite rates are low, but this is definitely something to be aware of. Especially if stray dogs make you nervous! The key is to have confidence around them.

I hope youโ€™re able to get off the beaten path and make it out to โ€˜Eua during your Tonga exploration. With its limited modernity, โ€˜Eua is an island for travelers more willing to be uncomfortable. But in the discomfort I think you will find true beauty and Tongan hospitality!

I would recommend booking your accommodation and internal flights first, and your international flights last when planning your trip. Reach out to Kiko’s via email [email protected] or Blue Water Retreat for accomodation!

Safe travels and enjoy Tonga!
